VIP Activation
Roles let you segment your most valuable members. Learn how to identify, add, and activate your content creators, product testers, ambassadors, and affiliates inside TYB.
Overview
Most brands already have VIPs. Content creators, product testers, ambassadors, and affiliates usually exist somewhere, just not inside TYB. They live in a spreadsheet, a Google Form, a DM thread, or a separate platform. When they're outside TYB, your community never sees them, and you lose the engagement that comes from your best members being visible.
A Role is how you bring any VIP group into TYB and unlock the right tools for them. This article covers how to set up a Role for each VIP type and what to do with it once it's live.
What Is a Role?
A Role is a tag you assign to members. Once a member has a Role, every activation tool in TYB, including gated challenges, chat channels, airdrops, and gifting, can be targeted to that group specifically.
TYB supports four common VIP types out of the box:
- Content Creators: members who produce UGC in exchange for coins, early access, or commission.
- Product Testers: members who qualify to test new products before launch in exchange for samples and early access.
- Ambassadors: your highest-tier members, who typically earn their way in through coins and community activity rather than applying.
- Affiliates: members who share a unique product link and earn commission on resulting sales through Obsessions+.
A member can hold more than one Role at a time. For example, the same person can be a Content Creator and an Ambassador.
How to Access and Use Roles
- Go to Brand Admin > Roles and select Create New Role.
- Name the Role (for example, "Creators," "Product Testers," or "Ambassadors") and set its visibility.
- Choose how members will be added to the Role:
- Upload a CSV if you already have a list (common for creators).
- Run a qualifying Series so members apply and are auto-assigned the Role on completion (common for testers and ambassadors).
- Assign manually from a member's profile in Membership > Members using the Airdrop button.
Engage your VIPs
- Once the Role exists, build a gated challenge restricted to that Role
- Optional: create a dedicated chat channel scoped to the Role for direct communication with that group.
For the full setup walkthrough, including detailed steps for assigning Roles by application, manual selection, or Airdrop, see Roles.
How Brands Can Use VIP Roles
1. Content Creators
Bring your existing creator list into TYB, supplement with community members and engage with curated challenges.
Example challenges:
- "Upload your get ready with me video with [product]"
- "Show us where [product] fits in your routine"
Impact:
- Creators earn coins for content, gated challenge access, and early access to drops, all inside TYB instead of a separate tool.
- Their content surfaces inside the community, so other members see it and engage.
- Creators who are already active can move into Obsessions+ for commission-based earning once they're producing content consistently.
2. Product Testers
Use a Series as your testing application. Members complete every step to qualify, which self-selects for people who will actually follow through.
Example Series:
- "Show us your routine."
- "Why are you the perfect fit?"
- “Complete your profile (address, instagram handle etc.)”
Impact:
- Completion auto-assigns the Product Tester Role, so there is no manual list to manage.
- Gifting ships samples directly from your Shopify catalog in Brand Admin, no spreadsheet required.
- You collect reviews and UGC before launch, from members who already proved they're motivated.
For a full step-by-step on building a tester Series, see Product Tester Role.
3. Ambassadors
Ambassadors can rise into this Role automatically as they earn coins and engage with your community.
Example configuration:
- Set a level threshold (for example, Level 3) that automatically qualifies a member as an Ambassador.
Impact:
- Early access, coin multipliers, and exclusive perks can all be gated to the Ambassador Role.
- The Role keeps working as your community grows. It does not require more manual tracking as your member count increases.
For brands building a structured Ambassador program (such as a campus or regional ambassador group) with its own application flow, see College Ambassador Role.
4. Affiliates (Obsessions+)
Turn creators, ambassadors, or any engaged member into a commission-tracked distribution channel.
Example:
- A member shares their unique product link.
- Their followers purchase.
- The member earns a commission automatically.
Impact:
- 5-minute Shopify pixel setup.
- Conversion-based payout, so you only pay when a sale happens.
Ask your TYB contact about enabling Obsessions+ for your community.
Best Practices
- Start with one VIP group. Pick whichever type already has the most members waiting somewhere else, and bring just that group in first.
- Build one gated challenge before inviting anyone into a new Role, so members get an immediate reward when they join.
- Use a Series to vet new members. You can assign the Role on completion.
- Use Gifting to ship to a Role directly from your Shopify catalog rather than tracking shipments manually.
- Let Ambassadors qualify automatically through coins and levels rather than building a separate nomination process. It scales without added admin work.
Conclusion
Roles let you bring every VIP type into one community instead of managing them across five different tools. Start with one Role this week and build the first gated challenge for it.
