Coins
On TYB, engagement pays off. Learn how rewards are optimized and distributed based on your brands AOV.
Coins are your community currency and the primary way you’ll reward members for engaging with your brand. TYB coins can be redeemed for percentage-based or dollar-based discount codes for use on your DTC site. Additionally, you can make other products or perks available for redemption in your TYB Shop.
Coin Values
- Coins: The value of each coin is unique to your brand’s AOV and business goals. Coins live in members’ wallets and have daily redemption limits, ensuring that rewards are ROI-positive for both your brand and your community.
- Levels: As members level up, their coins become more valuable:
- At Level 2, coins are worth 1.5x.
- At Level 3, coins are worth 2x.
- Expiration: Coins never expire, but discount codes generated using coins expire after 1 year.
Earning Coins
Members can earn coins in three ways:
- Completing Challenges: Engage with brand activities to earn rewards.
- Referring friends: Invite others to join and participate.
- Purchasing from your DTC site: Earn coins based on transactions, with 5% cash back in coins for each eligible purchase.
- Posting Obsessions: Reviews for verified purchases
Redeeming Coins
Coins can be redeemed for both % off and $ off discount codes. To help protect your brand’s margin, while incentivizing members, the following basic guardrails are in place:
- Maximum $-off limits by level (standard calculation based on AOV)
- Maximum %-off limits by level
- Minimum purchase requirement
- Code stacking controls
- Brands can disable stacking at the product, order, and/or shipping level to prevent additional codes from combining with TYB discounts.

Understanding Coin Liability
Coin liability is the total potential discount value of all coins currently held by your members. It is a normal and healthy part of running a loyalty program, and it comes with strong structural protections built in.
What coin liability actually means
Coin liability does not represent money leaving your business. It represents future purchasing intent. Coins can only be redeemed at checkout, against a qualifying order. Every dollar of liability redeemed is tied to a customer spending real money with your brand.
The math that matters
To fully redeem all outstanding coin liability, your members would collectively need to place thousands of orders and generate revenue that significantly exceeds the liability value itself. The minimum spend required to fully redeem coin liability will always be larger than the liability number, often by a multiple of 2x or more, because of the minimum purchase requirement and max discount limits per order.
How to approximate your coin liability at any time
The full Coin and Liability Report is available from TYB on request. For a quick self-serve estimate, you can use the following calculation from your Brand Admin Coins page:
Coins Held x Level 1 Coin Value = conservative liability estimate
This gives you a floor figure. Because the majority of members are typically at Level 1, this number will be close to the actual blended liability. The true figure will be modestly higher once Level 2 and Level 3 coin values are factored in for those members.
Built-in protections to know
- Minimum Purchase Requirement: Coins cannot be redeemed without a qualifying order value, meaning liability only moves when revenue comes in.
- Daily Redemption Limits: Each member has a cap on how many discounts can be used per day, which prevent large-scale redemption events
- Maximum Discount Caps: Discounts are capped at a specific value by level, so no single transaction can redeem an outsized amount
Coin Economy Configuration and Controls
Beyond the standard guardrails, brands have additional levers available to further shape their coin economy:
Minimum spend to advance levels
If you want to ensure that members unlocking higher coin multipliers (Level 2 and Level 3) are verified buyers, you can require a minimum spend threshold to advance.
For example, requiring members to spend the equivalent of one AOV before advancing to Level 2 and 2x your AOV for Level 3 ensures your highest-value discounts are going to your most loyal purchasing customers.
Minimum purchase requirement
TYB allows brands to set a dynamic minimum cart to ensure no $0 orders occur. This dynamic minimum cart scales with the discount that is actually being applied, ensuring that a brand’s set minimum spend goal is kept in mind on every purchase made with a $-off discount. We recommend setting the minimum spend goal just under the price of a brand’s core product — this allows a new member to redeem a discount on a single product to get introduced to your brand and test your products out.
Setting a minimum cart value before any TYB discount can be applied is one of the most effective ways to ensure every redemption event is a net-positive revenue transaction. We recommend this guardrail be in place for all brands.
Code stacking controls
Brands can disable the stacking of TYB discount codes with other promotions at the product, order, or shipping level. This is particularly important to configure before running site-wide sales or promotional periods.
Discount type controls
Brands can choose to offer dollar-off discounts only, disabling percent-off redemptions entirely. This gives you more predictable margin protection since a fixed dollar amount is easier to model against AOV than an open-ended percentage, particularly as your community scales and more members reach higher levels with larger discount ceilings.
Designing and Minting Coins
Your coin is the core currency of your TYB community and is used to reward members for participation and engagement. Each coin is created using the logo, color HEX, and slogan you provide during onboarding.
Coins on TYB follow a templated framework, allowing our team to quickly and consistently mint your coin prior to launch by applying your finalized brand assets (including your coin GIF and brand name) in Brand Admin. This ensures your coin feels fully on-brand while keeping setup simple and efficient.
