Gifting
Send a free product from your Shopify catalog to targeted community members. Learn how to set up gifts, send them via airdrop, and manage redemptions.
Overview
Gifting lets you deliver physical products directly to your TYB community members — no manual codes, no spreadsheets. Use it to seed creators before a launch, reward top contributors, or run surprise and delights that drive UGC. Gifts are sent as unique discount codes via email, and members redeem them directly in your Shopify store.
What Is Gifting?
Gifting is a role-based airdrop tool that lets you pick a product from your TYB Shop catalog and send it to one or more member roles. Each recipient gets a unique discount code that covers the full price of the product at checkout.
Key terms:
- Gift: A product you've designated for free delivery to members, along with a maximum recipient count (the Threshold).
- Threshold: The maximum number of recipients for a gift. The system decrements this count the moment an airdrop is sent — whether or not members redeem — so you never over-commit Shopify inventory.
- Airdrop: The action of sending a gift to one or more roles. Each send generates one unique discount code per recipient.
- Redemption: When a member completes Shopify checkout using their unique code.
Requirements:
- Your brand must have TYB Shop enabled.
- Your store must be on Shopify with inventory synced to the TYB sales channel.
How the discount works:
The discount is a fixed dollar amount equal to the price of the most expensive variant of the gifted product. This means whichever variant the recipient chooses at checkout is fully covered. (A percentage-off or 100%-off coupon would allow recipients to apply it to multiple units — the fixed amount prevents that.)
How to Access and Use Gifting
Set Up a Gift
- In Brand Admin, go to TYB Shop in the left navigation.
- Select Gifts.
- Click Add Gift.
- Choose a product from your TYB sales channel. The product list reflects your current Shopify inventory sync.
- NOTE: This gift must have a price set in Shopify — brands cannot gift a product worth $0.
- Set a Threshold — the maximum number of members you're willing to gift this product to.
- Save the gift.
Send a Gift via Airdrop
- From the Gifts list, click the three-dot menu on the gift you want to send.
- Select Send Gift to Members.
You can also send from the Airdrops page in Brand Admin.
- Select one or more roles to receive the gift (for example, Creators for a product-seeding campaign).
- Review the recipient count shown on the confirmation screen.
- Click Send.
Once sent, the system generates one unique discount code per recipient and decrements the threshold by the total recipient count immediately.
To gift a single member: Go to the Members table, find the member's row, click the three-dot menu, and select the gift option.
Manage Existing Gifts
The Gifts list (TYB Shop → Gifts) shows all gifts your brand has created, with columns for Product, Price, and Inventory. From each gift's actions menu, you can:
- Send Gift to Members — send to additional roles
- Edit Settings — adjust the threshold or swap the product
- View Redemptions — open the per-gift redemption table
- Delete — removes the gift from the list (does not invalidate codes already sent)
View and Manage Redemptions
- From the Gifts list, click the three-dot menu on any gift.
- Select View Redemptions.
The redemptions table shows every recipient with:
- User (avatar and username)
- Code (masked by default, e.g.,
asdf****S2334)
- Redeemed (yes/no)
- Invalidated (yes/no)
- Expire At
From this table you can:
- Search and filter recipients
- Resend the gift email to individuals or in bulk
- Invalidate codes individually or via bulk select
How Brands Can Use Gifting
1. Seed Creators Before a Launch
Get your product into the hands of your most engaged content creators before launch day, so UGC is ready to publish the moment you go live.
Example:
- "We're launching our new SPF next week — gift the Creators role with the full-size product so they can film their first impressions."
- "Airdrop the new lip set to your top 50 members tagged as Brand Ambassadors."
Impact:
- UGC pipeline built before launch
- Creator content available for social amplification on day one
- Stronger launch-week engagement from members who feel included
2. Reward Top Contributors
Recognize your most active members with a free product as a thank-you, reinforcing the behavior you want to see more of.
Example:
- "Gift every member in the VIP role your bestselling product as a thank-you for being part of the community."
- "Send a delighter gift to the segment of members who completed 5 or more challenges this month."
Impact:
- Higher retention among your most valuable members
- Increased likelihood of organic word-of-mouth and repeat UGC
- Deeper sense of community belonging
3. Run a Surprise and Delight
Surprise gifting campaigns create moments of delight that members talk about — on social, in reviews, and in conversations with friends.
Example:
- "Airdrop a free mini to every member who joined in the last 30 days as a welcome gift."
- "Send a mystery gift to a curated role of members who haven't engaged in 60 days to re-activate them."
Impact:
- Social sharing driven by the surprise element
- Re-engagement of lapsed members
- Brand perception lift from unexpected generosity
4. Support Product Launches and Campaigns
Pair gifting with a challenge or campaign to create a full loop: members complete an action, then get rewarded with the actual product.
Example:
- "Run a challenge asking members to post their unboxing video, gift the product first so they have something to unbox."
- "Gift a new fragrance to your Fragrance Enthusiast role ahead of a scent-focused campaign."
Impact:
- Higher challenge participation when members know the reward is real and physical
- Richer UGC with authentic unboxing and review content
- Stronger campaign cohesion across community and social channels
Best Practices
- Set a realistic Threshold before sending. The threshold decrements on send, not on redemption — so size it based on how many products you're actually prepared to ship, including members who may never redeem.
- Use role targeting precisely. Gifting to a broad role (like All Members) can burn through your threshold fast. Use tighter role segments — Creators, VIPs, recent joiners — to make gifts feel exclusive and protect inventory.
- Coordinate with your Shopify inventory. Confirm that your Shopify stock can cover the threshold before sending. The system protects against over-gifting beyond the threshold, but not against stock running low on the Shopify side from other channels.
- Check the redemptions table after sending. Monitor who has redeemed and who hasn't within the first few days. Use the resend email option to nudge members who haven't clicked through yet.
- Invalidate codes before deleting a gift. Deleting a gift removes it from the Gifts list but does not cancel codes already sent. If you need to cancel unredeemed codes, invalidate them from the redemptions table first, then delete.
- Time your airdrop with intent. Sending a gift ahead of a campaign or content push gives members time to receive, try, and post about the product — building your UGC bank before you need it.
FAQs
How do I ensure that members get free shipping for their gifting orders?
Brands can create a Shopify function that detects discount codes applied at checkout. If a valid code begins with “TYBGIFT”, the function will automatically apply free shipping to the configured standard domestic shipping method. For this to work, the TYBGIFT discount must be set in Shopify to combine with shipping discounts under its Combinations settings.
